Are Veneers Permanent?

Porcelain veneers are not a permanent dental solution. Furthermore, they are irreversible as they require the tooth enamel to be filled down. Other than that, veneers offer comfort and are affordable compared to the rest of the dental treatments.

What are Cosmetic Veneers and who can benefit from them?

Dental veneers are custom-made, wafer-thin shells designed to fit your dental shape and structure. They are bonded directly to your teeth to conceal minor flaws. Cosmetic veneers are ideal for cracked, stained, deformed, worn out, misaligned or uneven teeth.

These dental fixtures are, however, ideal for people with healthy gums and teeth and those not engaging in bruxism.

What are the Different Veneer Types?

The two common materials used in veneers are composite resin and porcelain.

    • Composite veneersComposite resin veneers, also known as the same-day veneers, are a cheaper option and they require less manipulation compared to porcelain. These tooth-colored composite veneers are made and fixed to the teeth on the same day.
    • Porcelain veneersPorcelain also called traditional veneers are thin ceramic shells which are bonded to your teeth. These veneers can last for a decade, and with the right dental care maintenance, porcelain veneers can last for over 20 years. Additionally, they are tailored to fit your natural tooth color or shape, and they are stain-resistant.

Porcelain veneers are irreversible as they require the natural teeth to be filed down to make room for the veneers, and once the enamel is cut down it doesn’t grow back. Unlike composite, porcelain requires multiple dental appointments.

Advantages of Porcelain Veneers

  • Veneers give your teeth a natural appearance
  • Porcelain is stain-resistant and is well tolerated by most people
  • They are stronger, durable and fit with your natural teeth shape

Disadvantages

  • Porcelain veneers are irreversible
  • They are costly compared with composite
  • Filling of the tooth enamel makes the teeth sensitive
  • Though rare, veneers can become loose and fall off

Removable veneers

Slap-on smile or veneers are removable false teeth that are worn onto your broken teeth. Removable teeth allow you to eat and drink as usual, but they need to be cleaned daily after meals.

What’s The Procedure for Fixing the Cosmetic Veneers?

Depending on your dental health and type of veneers, you may require one or multiple dental appointments.

Initial Visit

During your first visit, our dentist will examine your teeth and gums to determine if you are a candidate for veneers. They will discuss the available treatment options and guide you in choosing the best. The dentist will also take an x-ray and make impressions of your teeth.

Your enamel will be removed and a model made to create the veneer. This model is sent to the lab and this can take a couple of weeks.

As you wait, you will get a temporary dental veneer to protect your teeth from sensitivity and keep the surrounding teeth from shifting.

Second appointment

Before bonding the veneer, the dentist will temporarily place the porcelain to examine if it fits your color. They will trim and reshape the veneer to achieve the proper fit. A special cement is used to fix the veneers.

Even though it’s mandatory, your dentist may require you to return for a follow-up visit to examine how the gums are responding to the veneers.

How to Care for the Veneers

Veneers may need to be replaced at some point, however, with the proper dental care they can stay in good shape and last longer. For maintenance;

  • You need biannual checkups. This will make it easy to spot any potential problems
  • Don’t chew hard foods or use your teeth as a tool. Veneers are bonded on to stand everyday chewing. However, they can chip break or loosen and come off.
  • Practice good oral hygiene. Tooth decay can make the veneers to fall off, therefore, brush and floss your teeth daily
